Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa and was established in 1855. This was following the Great Trek by White Pioneers (Voortrekkers) from the then British controlled Cape Colony.

The City is named after the farmer Marthinus Wessel Pretorius who was also the son of a Voortrekker leader. Soon after its inception around the stream flowing from the natural fountains in the South, Pretoria became the capital of the Boer Republic (ZAR) in 1860.

Pretoria, also known as "Tshwane" amongst the Sotho speaking members of the population, has won itself acclaim as the Jacaranda City. This is attributed to the 70,000 Jacaranda trees (Jacaranda Mimosifolia, Bignonia-family) that are planted alongside City roads. When in full bloom during October, the City's beauty is enhanced.

Another attribute of the City is its infrastructure, so much so that it is an ideal tourist destination.

Pretoria is home to some of the finest Museums, historic houses and Monuments ranging form the Voortrekker Monument and Museum, the Miriammen Hindu Temple, the Melrose House where the peace of Vereeniging, terminating the Anglo Boer war, was signed and the Cenotaph in Attridgeville for the members of the Native Corps who died during World War II.
